DeKalb County officials are urging residents to exercise caution and use common sense as winter weather approaches. Forecasts predict 1+ inches of snow on Friday and possibly Saturday. Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to wait for officials to declare roads safe. I’ve also observed that some residents are continuing to water their lawns during this season. To prevent potential hazards, consider pausing lawn and vegetation watering for now. Excess water can spill onto roadways and freeze, increasing the risk of black ice.
In preparation for the predicted snowfall and freezing conditions, the DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has activated the Emergency Operations Center to enhance monitoring, coordinate resources, and support the operation of 24-hour warming centers. Warming centers opened last night at 8 p.m. and will remain available until further notice due to dangerously due to excessive cold windchills in the next 7-14 days.
The DeKalb County Government has announced the opening of four warming centers to provide 24-hour shelter for residents starting at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, until further notice:
- Frontline Response International: 2585 Gresham Road
- Tobie Grant Recreation Center: 593 Parkdale Drive
- Mason Mill Recreation Center: 1340 McConnell Drive (transportation to Frontline available; see pickup schedule below)
- Exchange Recreation Center: 2771 Columbia Drive (transportation to Frontline available; see pickup schedule below)
In addition, an overnight-only warming center will operate at the following location, with special transportation provided each morning to the 24-hour centers:
- North DeKalb Senior/Community Center: 3393 Malone Drive, Chamblee (see pickup schedule below for transportation to Frontline)
Residents are encouraged to utilize these centers during the cold weather event. For more details on transportation and schedules, see the information below. To read more from the statement including guidance on securing a ride to the shelters, please click here.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to implement the following recommendations to mitigate the effects of severe weather.
