Infrastructure

I want to share with our District 1 community the progress we made in 2024 and how we plan to build on it for the future. Serving as your Commissioner is an honor and an opportunity to drive meaningful change across DeKalb County.

Leadership in Economic Development

One of our most significant achievements in 2024 was the continued development of Assembly Studios, the project that transformed a former auto manufacturing plant into a thriving hub for Georgia’s film industry. Assembly Atlanta initially opened its doors in June 2023, and we’re excited that Assembly Studios isn’t done yet with its transformation. The sprawling complex, on the site of the former GM auto assembly plant, also has plans for further potential mixed-use development, including retail and office space, a hotel, residences, and an e-gaming/conference center. This project is a great example of how DeKalb County is a desired location for smart growth and economic development. By converting a brownfield into a state-of-the-art film production campus, Assembly Atlanta has been creating jobs and has strengthenedDeKalb’s place in the Hollywood of the South.

Improving Essential Services

Throughout 2024, we maintained a laser focus on enhancing sanitation services across DeKalb County and in particular in District 1. Our comprehensive approach included immediate solutions to issues raised by residents and businesses and that we observed ourselves, such as enhanced monitoring by code compliance officers. We also developed long-term strategies for dumpster capacity standards and collection schedules. I’ve taken a hands-on approach to these challenges, personally meeting with business owners and residents to understand and address their concerns, from replacing deteriorating dumpsters to implementing systemic improvements.

Legislative Achievements

At the state level, we’ve seen several key legislative victories this year. Notable among these was the passage of Senate Bill 26, which expands the ability of agencies to hold teleconference meetings, making government more accessible to residents and more efficient. We’ve also advocated for important housing-related legislation, including measures to address post-COVID-19-related evictions and establish a statewide eviction resolution program.

Community Engagement and Public Health

This year has been marked by significant community outreach efforts. In April, we hosted a town hall meeting at Mercer University’s Atlanta campus focused on finding solutions for homelessness. We also organized the Healthy Pets DeKalb event at Honeysuckle Park in Doraville and coordinated a criminal record restriction clinic and job fair in Decatur, demonstrating our commitment to both human and animal welfare in our community.

Looking Forward to 2025

As we move into the new year, we’re continuing to push forward on several initiatives, including:

  • Further development of our film industry infrastructure
  • Implementation of enhanced sanitation service standards
  • Advocacy for municipality-related legislation, including technology fee authorizations and park purchase provisions
  • Expansion of community service aide capabilities to improve emergency response efficiency

Building Partnerships, Serving Community

I’m proud to have worked to strengthen partnerships across all levels of government, as well as with businesses and our community. These collaborations have been essential in advancing our initiatives and ensuring that District 1’s voice is heard in crucial decisions affecting our future.

As we reflect on 2024, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, but I recognize there’s always more work to be done. Our success comes from listening to and working with our community members, and I remain committed to maintaining this collaborative approach as we move forward.

I want to thank everyone who has participated in our community events, shared their concerns, and worked with us to make District 1 an even better place to live and work. Your engagement and support have been crucial to our progress and will remain crucial to our success in 2025 and beyond.

As always, my office remains ready to serve you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with your concerns, ideas, or feedback as we continue working together to build a stronger DeKalb County. You can reach us at https://commissionerrobertpatrick.com/contact/.
